Theophilus Smith papers, 1883-1893.

This collection of letters is kept in the cover of a day book owned by Theophilus Smith, with newspaper clippings pasted inside. The letters are written by Smith, to him, and later, about him. At the time of his death, Smith was an embalmer in Meriden, Connecticut. From the items in the collection, we learn that Smith was divorced from his first wife. Following Smith's death, his widow and daughter, Katherine, continued to live in Meriden. Three of the letters were written by Smith's brother, J.E. Smith, of Volga, Iowa.
